Chance and necessity : how I became DDG-SG in May 1999

Articles on Pierre Goldschmidt

Over forty years of experience in the private sector and in international organisations, mainly in the fields of long-term energy supply, environmental protection and nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament and security.

General management functions, strategic planning, engineering, commercial and industrial development on an international scale. Extensive practice in political negotiations (ministers, ambassadors, parliamentarians) and media relations.

Chance favours only the prepared mind” Louis Pasteur

In this picture I am in my office at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. I have just taken up my position as Deputy Director General of the Agency, responsible for the Department of Safeguards, whose main task is to verify the exclusively peaceful use of nuclear materials in non-nuclear-weapon states.

Here’s how I got there.
